Now that springtime is approaching I’m motivated to get outside and amp up my workout routine.
Although I’m excited about clocking in some extra miles at the gym, my old exercise clothes don’t look like they can take another lap.
When you’ve been working out in over-sized t-shirts, baggy shorts and alternating between the same two sports bras for the past three years, I guess you tend to forget that you can actually be fit and look fabulous at the same time.
That’s why I was delighted to learn about Active Ego, a new Dallas-based plus size focused active wear label. It features curve-friendly, fashion-forward designs for the everyday woman.
The line includes a gambit of chic workout apparel including sports bras, leggings, transitional wear, accessories and even tees that will make you look hot, while you’re actually sweaty and hot.
Sports Bras for Those Amply Blessed
It’s the ideal athleisure gear tailored for today’s active curvy woman who has longed for fashionable workout clothes that properly fit, without having to sacrifice style.
Best of all Active Ego is literally the perfect fit for those ladies who have been amply blessed with a little more up top.
With the average bra cup size at 34DD, many ladies have a very hard time finding the proper support in athletic wear, especially when you’re trying to wrangle the girls into an ill-fitting bra.
If you’re lucky to find a sports bra in your size, it usually comes in boring colors or makes you look like you’re wearing a big boob log across your chest.
That old school athletic gear has now fallen wayside along with velour warm up suits and the Walkman.
Today, Active Ego athleisure apparel offers an exciting alternative. The clothing is not only hip and trendy, but it’s also functional and fashionable and intentionally designed to make wearer feel empowered thanks to its founder, Jennifer James.
I caught up with Jennifer at a bloggers’ reception hosted by Chocolate Secrets in Dallas’ artsy upscale Oak Lawn neighborhood to learn more about what inspired her to start this unique fashion line.
Necessity Inspires Invention
Jennifer says that she immediately wanted get back to working out about two months after she gave birth to her second child. But like many new moms, Jennifer explained that she was now twice the size she was before she had her daughter and her breasts had enlarged to a ‘G’ cup size.
“It was important for me to find a good sports bra and workout clothes that made me feel and look good,” Jennifer says. “I quickly realized that modern, stylish athleisure wear for plus size women did not exist. Shortly after, I decided that I would design and create my own clothing.”
Thank goodness for gutsy ingenuity!
Since launching the brand, Jennifer’s line has been showcased at New York Fashion Week and featured in many style publications and on television. Plans are on tap to partner with major retailers soon, in addition to growing her burgeoning online fashion business.
Which brings me to the name. Why “Active Ego?”
Jennifer explains that in addition to the line’s chic outerwear that her uniquely designed sports bras come in a variety of larger cup sizes. The bra sizes come with distinct names to personify various egos of today’s empowered woman (hence Active “Ego”).
There’s size E for Electric; F for Free; G for Glamour; H for Honor; I for Inspire; and J for Justice.
Pretty ingenious marketing, but I just want M for Mine.
