The 36th Annual MLK Celebration – Dallas

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is a long-standing tradition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, dedicated to honoring King’s life and legacy. The weekend-long celebration kicks off on Friday, January 12, 2018, and ends on Monday, January 15, 2018, with events including the MLK Celebration Fair, the MLK Candlelight Ceremony, the MLK Awards Banquet, and the MLK Day Parade. This year’s theme is “Reflect on Yesterday for a Better Tomorrow.”

The MLK Celebration Fair is Friday, January 12, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the MLK Recreation Center, located at 2901 Pennsylvania Avenue. Attendees can discover job opportunities, apply for college, and receive free medical screenings. This event is free and open to the public.

The MLK Candlelight Ceremony is Friday, January 12, 2018, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the MLK Recreation Center.

Dr. William J. Barber II Repairers of the Breach

This event is hosted by the Alpha Sigma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., with Keynote Speaker Pastor Freddie Haynes of Friendship West Baptist Church. Winners of the Dr. King Scholarship and Essay Contest will be announced. This event is free and open to the public.

The MLK Awards Banquet is Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas, located at 300 Reunion Boulevard. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the silent auction, with proceeds going towards MLK Social Services programs. The Keynote Speaker is Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President and Senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach. Special guests include Yolonda Williams, Host of CW33’s Newsfix and the Life School Oak Cliff Honor Choir from Dallas, Texas. The Annual MLK Day Parade is Monday, January 15, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., starting at the intersection of Holmes Street and MLK Boulevard. It will proceed down MLK Blvd. to the entrance of Fair Park. Participants include elected officials, high school bands and dance teams, car clubs, horses, local businesses and other community organizations. The parade will be streamed live on CW33.
