National education leaders, celebrities and thousands of Atlanta area youth are coming together for the first annual Dr. Kevin “Khao” Cates Presents: The Young And Winning Summit on Saturday, April 20th at the Riverside Epicenter in Austell, GA.
The action packed full-day event is intended to promote artistic expression through music, dance, TV and Film as it relates to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, otherwise known as S.T.E.A.M. More than 2,000 K-12 students will be in attendance, partaking in various workshops, fun activities and performances as they learn about the application of S.T.E.A.M into the performing arts, visual arts, designing arts, literary arts and other creative forms.
“We are extremely excited to bring this amazing event to the community in an effort to empower our youth and expose them to ways their education can open doors in their fields of interest,” said Dr. Kevin “Khao” Cates. “As someone who built my career in music and creative arts, I think it is important for celebrities and successful creatives to give back by sharing knowledge and information with young people in an impactful way. They are the leaders of tomorrow.”
Dr. Cates, known as “Khao” in the music industry, is a Grammy nominated, multi-platinum music producer behind more than 35 million records sold for recording artists like Jay Z, T.I., Ludacris, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Derez Deshon, Gucci Mane, Lil’ Wayne and many others. In 2008, he launched the 501c3 non-profit, Bridge DA Gap, geared towards helping urban youth to cope with and overcome social challenges. From that, he developed a K-12 school curriculum called KOOLriculum that infuses music with Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.
KOOLriculum has been so successful, many schools across the nation and even abroad have incorporated it into their classrooms. Most recently, he created the KoolAR book, a cutting edge innovation that utilizes music and Augmented Reality (AR) to assist children with math and reading. Dr. Cates’ endeavors have resulted in numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama.
“My goal has always been to not just be successful, but significant,” he said. “This is one of the ways I’m able to do that. I’m happy to work with partners Johnny Thomas, Derrick Buckner, and their daughters Zion Thomas and Maeylisia Buckner who are the original founders who engaged me to help bring this event to life.”
Among celebrities to attend are Serayah McNeill from FOX’s hit TV series Empire, Dr. Heavenly Kimes and Dr. Jackie Walters from BRAVO TV’s Married 2 Medicine; actress, model and singer Taylor Ruffin, motivational speaker Terri Crook and Dance Talk Dialogue founder and editor Shamiar Spain among many other special celebrity guests to be announced. The day will feature education sessions, a dance challenge and fashion showcase, followed by a Red Carpet affair, VIP reception and musical performances.
Overall, there is no shortage of opportunities for youth to have fun, while learning a lot in the process.
“We want to inspire the next generation of thinkers and doers. That is why [the summit] was created,” Johnny Thomas said. “We are very happy to team up with Khao because he is a person with a great platform who already has boots on the ground and has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference.”
